Really Simple Scenery

RSS - Really Simple Syndication

explain a bit about rss - XML format - data can be used by any platform (agnostic). it's just data. doesnt have to be 'words'

RSS creates new 'landmasses' - for people to build new services/architecture on

Think delta rivers as a freeze frame of an RSS feed

I believe RSS has the potential to be the “UNIX pipe of the internet”, and that one of the simplest and most pervasive “mesh” needs that many of us have is to provide connections for things such as contacts, calendar entries, messages, files and the like. http://rayozzie.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!FB3017FBB9B2E142!285.entry

Microsoft Vista - the name is telling...

Data flooding? Excessive republishing..no that's fine - fresh data is good data?
Excessive data caching - slows down river flow

What is needed to build services on top of RSS?
Stability..
Oppotunity..
Risk analysis?

And when will the charges come to RSS?
$1 per Terabyte of fresh data?

"The really big opportunity to monetize RSS/Atom isn't going to come from advertising in blogs," Wyman continued. "It is going to come from the indirect effect of creating a whole new way for businesses to publish information and communicate with their customers." CTO Bob Wyman / PubSub http://www.internetnews.com/bus-news/article.php/3440541

Dick Costolo, chief executive of FeedBurner, which has sought to allow online bloggers and publishers to make money out of their RSS feeds, says: "Many of the top publishers and bloggers are either full feed, have switched to full feed, or are experimenting with full feeds." He cites Gawker.com, which now offers subscribers the choice of the blog's full text with adverts, or a partial feed with no ads but linked to an ad-supported web page.

Lets not confuse this with 'charging for podcasts'
http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2006/02/20/ricky_gervais_podcast_paid/
this is paying for media assets (the audio in this case) not for the rss feed itself

So if you take a little of Amazon API, mix in a dash of Google Maps, and sprinkle it with -- all hosted in disparate geographies with a myriad of caching and delivery schemes -- it's potentially a recipe for poison instead of the chocolate cake we're all eagerly anticipating will be served (unless the web-app-mashup'er is really, really careful to grab sugar instead of cyanide).

and so to archetecting on top of RSS

whats gets in the way?
* contracts
* "no by default"
* rights and licenses - and your right to transfer them
* privacy
* authority

these are invarients, influcing the flow of data.
for what reason

reprise (insurance)
management control - responsability (insurance)
law - supported by investing media owers (insurance)
visibility / fear of exploitation? (insurance)
responsibility (insurance)

But how well does this work? Where was the insurance for New Orleans? The reprise, control, the law, visibility, responsability?
IN the end the vast amount of repair is doen by the community, a community that the management under valued. And possibly still does whilst they rebuild their homes. Largely ignored..

Building upon open data produced and managed by a community supported and encouraged by the management seems to be the style of business.

An environment with corporate resources can bring diversity, customers and demand without the need for overt advertsing. Marketing is the 'weldability' that diverse communities will need to communicate with. Corporate support is required within the spaces within guises of communties, for none are the same. The growth of a delta is fractual, everyone is different and the creativity reqiured to adapt to algorhymic growth is either to be seen as simple rules or complex specticles.

Simple rules do lead to complexity, fortuately the complexity is our entertainment, simplicity is business.
